This is going to be a " Watch This Space" page as in the last year we have had quite a few new horses in. As you can see from the details on the earlier horses, quite a lot of them are around the eighteen mark, or even older and we are going to be looking for good retirement homes for some of the arthriticky horses, or having to make some tough decisions about which ones can last another winter in the High Country. Toss and Trigger always end up in the garden in harsh southerly storms, with covers on and well stuffed with good lucerne hay, to the detriment of my lawns I might add, but what are a few potholes when balanced against the old boys happiness?
Since January 2010 there have been nine new arrivals, one of the horses, Kilmun, turned out to have an unsuitable temperament and has gone to a more experienced and less public orientated home, one of the new boys has been sold on to our good friend Melissa. and one lovely horse, Bridie, fell foul of incurable colitis and had to be put to sleep, after about a month of intensive but non successful treatment. Gallop Free Bridie - we all miss you.!
The Newbies are:- Jaccka - [ Jaccka Sparky ] Davey - [ Gimmetheball ] Kadey - [ Kades Icon ] Scout - [ Roly ] Perkins - [ Perky ] Speedy - [ Struthisstuff ] Rocky - [ Natrock ] Cat - [ Copy Cat Lavra ] Holly - [ Iwannago ] Topper - [ Radiant Topaz TB ] Della - [ Delmas Lass ] Beeby - [ Be Be Gun ] As time goes on there will be photos of all. Scout and Rocky were already ridable when they got here and are now going on treks with volunteers on. Kadey is still just a baby and has to grow up quite a bit before we back her.
What Are You DOING Down There?
Speedy - [Struthistuff]
Melissa is our good friend from Finland originally. She has an English husband and they have been in NZ for a few years now. She used to be up here all the time and was probably our best rider, difficult for any horse to dislodge, and very, very determined to always do a good job. She has been absent for a while, raising two lovely wee girls, but now she is back in earnest. She fell head over heels in love with one of the Newbies, Speedy, and having bought him straight off she has fed and pampered him for weeks and weeks until finally I was able to take this photo. Under her care this very Thoroughbredy Standardbred has blossomed and is gaining weight and confidence.. This was one of the first times anyone had ever sat upon him and as you can see - he really doesn't mind at all. Don, The Bloody Nuisance from next door, is keeping a watchful eye on proceedings. Nothing can happen round here without his supervision!
Even More New Horses
In 2011 even more new horses have arrived at Ardnadam. Christchurch and its permanent state of earthquake has a lot to answer for. Two lovely horses have come in the last few months and belong to our new friend Wendy. Actually one and a half horses. Jazz is a quarter horse/Standardbred cross and her diminuitive companion is Syd, who is piebald and about thirty three inches tall! I was worried he would get himself killed up here or trampled in the mud by our bossy bunch, but he can hold his own with the best of them and doesn't see lack of size as a problem that should concern him. As he is so short he goes under all our horse friendly fences at will. and pops back through when he has eaten his fill or been exploring and is ready to find Jazz again.
Do you remember our American friend Nancy? Well she and her husband had to move to the North Island and she lives near a Thoroughbred stud. When the horses are found to be too slow to win races they have a clear out, of the seriously permanent variety, one way ticket to the dog tucker truck. Nancy managed to rescue a lovely natured Thoroughbred called Topper and send him down to us a couple of months ago. He was fairly scatty when he arrived and when he spotted Sid for the first time, in fact Sid was busy chasing him at top speed, Topper took the fence at the end of the Top Yard like a Bullfinch Fence at Badminton, anything was better than actually meeting pint size. It was a spectacular jump!
The next new horse is Beeby. He arrived at the same time as Topper and they have ended up good friends. He is a dark brown Standardbred with a pretty head and is currently enjoying feeling great, as our chiropractor came through last week and put back several vertebra and a hip that was out. He might have raced a lot faster if only they had checked to see if he was sore!
